Title
The Douce Apocalypse
Subject
The Douce Apocalypse depicts the mysteries of the New Testament Book of Revelation in 97 miniatures accompanied by the biblical text and a medieval commentary text, both in Latin. Remarkably, this book was bound with a number of its miniatures only partially completed, giving a rare glimpse into the medieval book-making practice.
Description
This facsimile presents one of the most courtly and luxurious examples of Gothic manuscript illustration in medieval Apocalypse manuscripts, which became “best-sellers” in later Medieval England. Along with its modern binding, the facsimile replicates the unfinished imagery and the various fly leaves added centuries after production to protect the Apocalypse.
